Nothing has changed.

Nothing has changed.

Before I explain that, allow me this brief bunny-trail.

Those who know me well will affirm that one of my passions is studying the Bible.  To be technical about it, I love exegesis and hermeneutics.  If those words mean nothing to you, don’t worry.  It is just the techno-babble of an aficionado of researching the Scriptures.  Because of this passion, I often quote my friend, Glenn, who taught me the foundations of Bible study.  His statement (and I have made it mine) is this:

A text
Without a context
Is a pretext.

I’m about to give you a list of Scriptures - all from the Psalms (NASB) - and all of them brief quotes.  In other words, without a context.  Why?  Because it would be impossible to give the full context on each of these and keep this under 25 pages.  But I’m not asking you to trust me - go look these up on your own.  I believe I’m representing them accurately.  They do speak for themselves.  End bunny-trail.

Nothing has changed.

There is great consternation about what will happen tomorrow in the U.S. elections.  Who will win?  Will there be a lawsuit by the loser?  Is democracy at risk?

I have no idea how tomorrow is going to unfold.  The hype and energy level is maxed out.  If the political environment was a drum and you were to drop a coin on it the coin would bounce up to the height of the CN Tower.  “High-strung” is an understatement.

Even though these lines are but brief parts of larger texts, they DO provide context for tomorrow:

2:1  Why are the nations in an uproar
And the peoples devising a vain thing?

22:28  For the kingdom is the LORD'S
And He rules over the nations.

46:6  The nations made an uproar,
 the kingdoms tottered;
He raised His voice,
the earth melted.

47:8  God reigns over the nations,
God sits on His holy throne.

66:7  He rules by His might forever;
His eyes keep watch on the nations;
Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.

113:4  The LORD is high above all nations;
His glory is above the heavens.

The ancient peoples were not insulated from the political currents of their day.  World powers like the Assyrians, Babylonians, Syrians, and others came and went.  Most of them presented some kind of risk to God’s people.  But none of them were ever a threat to topple the King from His throne.

If we are a people of faith, then these truths must shape our perspective and reaction to what happens tomorrow.  It is good to have brute optimism.  Yet how much better our confidence in the True, Living God who is working His purposes even though He is very much hidden and unacknowledged.  As such, His plan and purposes will not be thwarted or frustrated.  The cool thing is we will be able to look back in a few days and say, “So, THAT is what God has planned.”  Because what happens will be what He wants it to be.

And if that is true of the global issues such as politics in the U.S., how much more is His care for us?

And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another,
because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
And God will exalt you in due time,
if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand
by casting all your cares on him
because he cares for you.

(1Pet. 5:5-7 NET)

How exciting to realize that tomorrow we will learn the details of God’s plan, known by Him since before the creation of the world!  And not only that, we will learn the results of the election.

Keep looking up!  Nothing has changed.
